1. What is Nishkramana?
Nishkramana is the ritual in which a newborn, who has been kept safely inside the home since birth, is taken outside for the very first time and introduced to the world.
It is one of the 16 Hindu Samskaras and is performed for the child’s longevity, health, protection, and prosperity.
2. Ideal Time to Perform Nishkramana
- This ceremony can be performed anytime between 12 days after birth and up to 4 months.
- It is commonly combined with the Naming Ceremony (Namakaranam).
- Otherwise, it can be performed separately during the 3rd or 4th month:
- In the 3rd month, the baby is shown the Sun.
- In the 4th month, the baby is shown the Moon.
3. Where Should the Baby Be Taken First?
- The baby’s first outing should be to a temple.
- After the temple visit, the baby may be taken to the mother’s relatives’ homes.
4. Rituals Performed During Nishkramana
- The Mruta Sanjeevini Mantra is chanted, and a protective sacred thread or bracelet is tied on the baby’s hand.

10. Astrological Guidelines for Nishkramana Lagna
- The Lagna should ideally receive aspects from benefic planets.

- Malefics placed in 3rd, 6th, or 11th houses bring supportive results.
- The 8th house should be free from afflictions.
- The Moon should be strong, indicating good mental and physical wellbeing for the child.
