Karna Vedanam
Karna Vedhanam (Ear Piercing Ceremony)
“Karna Vedhanam” means “Ear Piercing” or “Kathani Vizha.”
It comes from the words “Karna” (ear) and “Vedhanam” (piercing).
According to Ayurveda, the ceremony involves piercing the ears with specific metals such as gold, silver, or copper to stimulate vital marma points.
This ritual is performed to invoke divine blessings for the child’s health, well-being, and prosperity, and it is one of the 16 Vedic samskaras.
When Can a Child Undergo Ear Piercing?
- Ear piercing can be done on the 10th, 12th, or 16th day after birth, or during the 6th, 7th, 8th, or 10th month.
- For Boy baby, the right ear is pierced first; for Girls baby, the left ear is pierced first.
- The child should be seated facing East during the ceremony.
- Prefer morning or noon, and avoid evening and night
- This ritual is often performed along with the mundan (tonsure) ceremony, celebrated as a festive event with ear ornaments (kaadhani).
- The ceremony is most often held at the family deity’s (Kuladeivam) temple
- The child is seated on the maternal uncle’s lap while the ears are pierced by a priest or a traditional goldsmith.
- After piercing, gold earrings or studs gifted by the maternal uncle are inserted into the ears.

Tithis such as Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, and Trayodashi are chosen for their calm and harmonious planetary energies.
They help ensure a smooth ceremony and long-term positive impact.
Auspicious Lagnas
Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Pisces lagnas are favorable as they indicate stability and overall well-being.
Scorpio, Leo, and Aquarius lagnas are avoided due to their volatile or sensitive energy patterns.

- Mercury must not be in the 8th house to avoid complications during the ritual.
- Avoid performing the ceremony in the child’s birth star or birth month to prevent energetic conflicts.
- A strong Jupiter in lagna or trines brings blessings, but Jupiter in 6, 8, or 12 is avoided due to weaker influence.
