Bride’s First Cooking Ceremony (Aduppu Etrudhal)
In Tamil tradition, a bride’s first cooking at her husband’s home is a significant and auspicious ritual known as “Samayal Seer” or “Aduppu Etrudhal.” This ceremony is usually performed after the wedding, often during the bride’s first visit to the groom’s house.
Samayal Seer (சமையல் சீர்)
generally translates to “cooking arrangements” or “kitchen organization”. It refers to the preparation, setup, and logistics involved in the cooking process.
Aduppu Etrudhal (அடுப்பு ஏற்றுதல்)
means “lighting the stove”. This is the specific action of starting the fire or activating the heat source (traditionally, a wood-fired stove called a viragu aduppu) to begin cooking a meal
The ritual symbolizes the bride’s formal entry into her new household and her acceptance of household responsibilities. Lighting the stove and preparing food for the first time is considered a sacred act, representing prosperity, nourishment, and harmony in the family.
