What is a Thirumangalyam Ot Tali?
A Thirumangalyam is a sacred emblem worn by a married woman as a symbol of her marital status. It is traditionally tied by the groom around the bride’s neck during the wedding ceremony, using a turmeric-threaded cord or gold chain.
It is regarded as an auspicious ornament, representing marital harmony, protection, and the blessings of longevity.
The design, shape, and size of the Thirumangalyam vary across communities, reflecting regional customs and cultural traditions.
1. Auspicious Days to Purchase the Thirumangalyam
Only certain days are traditionally preferred for making the Thirumangalyam:
- Monday , Wednesday , Thursday , Friday
These days are ruled by benefic planets (Chandra, Budha, Guru, Shukra) and bring prosperity, harmony, and long marital bliss.
Days to Avoid:
Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday are generally avoided as they are considered less auspicious for marriage-related preparations.
2. Auspicious Nakshatras (Stars)
The following stars are considered highly favorable for preparing the Thirumangalyam:
- Rohini , Uttaram, Uttiradam , Swati , Revati , Mrigasirisha , Pushyam (Poosam) Anuradha (Anusham)
These stars promote happiness, longevity, and a stable married life.
3. Auspicious Tithis
Good lunar days (Tithis) for this ritual include:
Dwitiya (2nd) , Tritiya (3rd) , Panchami (5th) , Saptami (7th) , Dashami (10th) , Trayodashi (13th)
Tithis to Avoid:
Amavasya (New Moon) , Prathamai (1st day) , Chaturdashi (14th day)
These are considered unsuitable for sacred activities.
4. Auspicious Lagna (Ascendants)
The following Lagnas are preferred:
Taurus (Rishabha) , Gemini (Mithuna) , Cancer (Katakam) , Virgo (Kanni) , Libra (Thula) , Sagittarius (Dhanusu) , Pisces (Meenam)
Fiery signs such as Aries and Leo are usually avoided because they are linked with aggression and instability.
5. General Astrological Rules
While choosing the Muhurtham (auspicious time), the following conditions must be satisfied:
- Benefic planets should be placed in the 1st, 5th, or 9th houses (Trikona houses) from the Lagna.
- Malefic planets in the 3rd, 6th, or 11th houses give positive results.
- The Moon must be strong and free from affliction.
- The 7th house (Marriage House) should be free from malefic influence for a harmonious marriage.
- The 8th house (Longevity) should also be free from malefics to ensure a long, stable marital life.
- Avoid Vishti Karana (Bhadra Karana).
- Vyatipata Yoga must not be present.
- Avoid days when the boy or girl is under Janma, Anujanma, or Thrijanma Nakshatra.
- Both must have Tara Bala on the selected day.
- Do not choose a day when either is under Chandrashtama.
